Small Group Experience

This series made possible with support from The Russell Berrie Foundation and Kaplen JCC on the Palisades.

The partner organizations of Community Calls seek to strengthen relationships, disrupt tensions, and advance change though programming that brings people from diverse backgrounds into community together. Join together with neighbors from around the community in a small group setting to explore literature and texts that will open up space for exploration, learning, and dialogues. This group will meet using a variety of media such as texts, podcasts, art and film to create avenues of learning and sharing.

Dialogue in Good Faith, Small Group Discussions

May-June 2024

Following the well-attended and engaging Dialogue in Good Faith event in February, a group of participants continued the dialogue in a two-session series facilitated by Tikvah Weiner and convening at the Korean Community Center and the Kaplen JCC.   This continued dialogue has led to deeper relationships and ongoing collaborations beyond the events.

Celebrating AAPI-Jewish Heritage Month - Part II

2nd Annual Community Celebration: Asian American Pacific Islander and Jewish American Heritage Months

May 9, 2024 – Korean Community Center, Tenafly

Anti-Defamation League New York/New Jersey Region, Fort Lee Chinese American Community Association, Fort Lee Chinese Americans, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh USA, Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey, Kaplen JCC on the Palisades, Korean Community Center, and Namaste Global came together for the second year to collectively celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Month and Jewish American Heritage Month.  This year, the focus was cultural art performances and the gathered group enjoyed singing by the Kaplen JCC Young People’s Chorus at Thurnauer; and, dances by Fan Dance traditional Korean dance, Hope Sing and Dance Troup traditional Chinese dance group, Kaplen JCC Senior Teen Dance Team, and Kathak: Indian Classical Dance.   Following the performance, the 100+ attendees broke into small diverse group to meet one another, and discuss what was the most interesting thing they learned or experienced that they did not know before, and, what they you eager to learn more about based on something they heard or saw.  At the end, and with support from the Kent Family, Glass Gardens, and Aquarius everyone enjoyed a sampling of foods.

February 25, 2024 – Kaplen JCC, Tenafly

Community Calls gathered over 150 community members to hear the thought leaders on the panel including Imam Abdullah Antepli of Duke University, Dr. Terrence Johnson of Harvard Divinity School, and Rabbi Hilly Haber of Central Synagogue in Manhattan and the panel discussion was moderated by Tikvah Wiener of the Idea Institute.  Over 100 participants continued learning together with facilitated small-group discussions led by Community Calls partner leaders.  This special event met the core goals of Community Calls of bringing people together to strengthen relationships, help disrupt tensions, and advance change in our community.

Celebrating MLK

Ebenezer’s 54th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Day

Monday, January 15, 2024, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Englewood

Community Calls was honored to participate and promote the annual community-wide celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King.  The event started in downtown Englewood and progressed with a meaningful walk to the Ebenzer Baptist Church.  At the church the gathered community enjoyed fellowship and warm beverages; and then a beautiful ceremony and service. 

Celebrating AAPI-Jewish Heritage Month - Part I

May 4, 2023 – Kaplen JCC Taub Auditorium, Tenafly

Anti-Defamation League New York/New Jersey Region, Fort Lee Chinese American Community Association, Fort Lee Chinese Americans, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh USA, Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey, Kaplen JCC on the Palisades, and Korean Community Center came together for the first time ever to collectively celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Month and Jewish American Heritage Month.  We were honored to have community members Mai Abe facilitate the panel discussion with Ilan Bruhim, Stephanie Cohn, Tak Furumoto, Amy KoTang, Yogindra Gupta, and Seongwon Kim.  The panel discussed something that they thought might surprise people about the diversity of their community, a hardship or challenge their family faced/faces, and a personal favorite part of their culture.  Following the panel, the 100+ attendees broke into small diverse group to meet one another, and similarly reflect on a personal favorite part of their culture, challenge they face, and something they wish others understood about their community.   A the end, everyone enjoyed a sampling of foods representing the various Asisan American and Jewish American cultures.
